The consists of the following:

(a) a bibliography of an approved area of study, containing not more than one hundred items;

(b)  two essays, each not exceeding 4,000 words in length, or equivalent exercises, on

topics approved or prescribed by the Degree Committee for the Faculty of English;

(c)  a thesis, of not less than 10,000 words and not more than 15,000 words in

length (including tables, footnotes, and appendices, but excluding bibliography), on a subject approved by the Degree Committee.

The includes an oral on the thesis and on the general field of knowledge within which it falls, and, at the discretion of the Examiners, on the work submitted by the candidate under (a) and (b) above; save that the Examiners may, at their discretion, waive the requirement for an oral .

Applicants should provide the statement of proposed research, the piece of written work and the declaration of relevant special skills required of all applicants in research in the Faculty of English.

(i) a thesis, of not more than 20,000 words in length, excluding appendices and bibliography, on a topic approved by the Degree Committee for the Faculty of Architecture and History of Art;

three essays, each of not more than 5,000 words, on topics lo be chosen by the candidate from a list of subjects published by the Degree Committee; provided that with the permission of the Degree Committee a candidate may substitute a comparable exercise for not more than one of the essays;

provided that a candidate for the M.Phil. Degree who has previously been a candidate either for the First or for the Second for the Diploma in Architecture may not offer in the for the degree a thesis or an essay on a subject that overlaps significantly with the dissertation or with any of the essays offered by the candidate for either of the Examinations for the Diploma.

The may, at the discretion of the Examiners, include an oral upon the thesis and upon the general field of knowledge within which it falls.

Special Note.

Applicants are requested to include with their application some evidence of their written work (e.g. an essay) and a short statement of their research interests. Closing date for completed applications: 31 January.
