There are certain allowances which the Board of Graduate Studies can make you once you are registered for the Ph.D., M.Sc. and M.Litt. Degrees. For example, permission may be granted to work outside Cambridge in order to undertake fieldwork, to consult archives, or for similar academic reasons, but such permission is not usually granted until after the first year of a course. Provision also exists for the granting of exemption from three of the required terms of research on the basis of research or other work done after graduation but before starting research at Cambridge, but applications for such exemption are not considered until you are registered for a research degree and your dissertation is ready or virtually ready to submit.

All applications for allowances are considered on their merits and are not granted automatically. Whatever allowances may be granted, all candidates for the Ph.D., M.Sc. or M.Utt. Degrees must spend at least three terms (one year) in residence in the University. You are advised to assume in your plans and funding arrangements that, if admitted, you will need to spend the full period of your course in Cambridge.

Details of the various allowances are included in the official regulations and in the Memorandum to Graduate Students issued with the formal offer letter. Further copies may be obtained from the Secretary of the Board of Graduate Studies.
