Oriental Studies
The course of study includes lectures, seminars and individual supervision. The examination consists of:
(a)
three written papers on subjects approved by the Degree Committee for the Faculty of Oriental Studies, provided that, with the approval of the Degree Committee, a candidate may offer, in place of one or more of those papers, the same number of essays, each of not more than 5,000 words, or equivalent alternative approved by the Degree Committee. The papers to be sel will be announced early in the first Terra;
and
(b) a thesis of not more than 15,000 words, including footnotes and appendices but excluding bibliography, on a subject approved by the Degree Committee.
A candidate may, by special permission of the Degree Commiltee, granted after considering his or her experience, qualifications, and proposed subject, offer a thesis of not more than 25,000 words in length, including footnotes and appendices but excluding bibliography, on a subject approved by the Degree Committee. In place of the examination format given above.
At the Examiners’ discretion the examination may also include an oral examination on the thesis and on the general field of knowledge in which it falls. Candidates may be required in the oral examination to demonstrate a practical application of their ability to handle literary or other materials used in research.
