Musicology
The course consists of seminars and individual supervision. The seminars will provide an introduction in general and specific issues and methods in musicology. The M.Phil, in musicology incorporates an intensive course in the Michaelmas Term upon which the examination of the coursework component is based. Students are expected to attend further courses and lectures relevant to their chosen subject of research as advised by their supervisor.
The examination consists of:
(a) a thesis of not more than 25,000 words in length (inclusive of tables, footnotes, and appendices, but excluding bibliography, music examples, and transcriptions) on a subject in musicology approved by the Degree Committee for the Faculty of Music; and
(b) a critical study of not less than 5,000 and not more than 7,500 words in length (excluding footnotes, bibliography and musical examples) focusing on a specific text, method or subject deriving from the materials covered in the taught course, to be submitted by the fourth day of Full Lent Term.
At the Examiners’ discretion the examination may include an oral examination on the thesis and the critical study submitted by the candidate and on the general field of knowledge within which they fall. Closing date for completed applications: 31 March.
