Musical Composition
The course consists of seminars and individual supervision in both analysis and composition. The syllabus includes analysis; historical methods of teaching musical composition; theories and philosophies of twentieth-century music.
The examination consists of:
(a) an essay of not more than 5,000 words in length, being an analytical study in the music of a composer, including consideration of the background of and literature about the composer’s work;
(b) an essay of not more than 5,000 words in length on a subject relating to either (i)
the problems and methods of teaching composition in a period in the history of
music; or (ii) the themes and philosophies of twentieth century music;
(c) Two compositions as follows, which must be notated in a conventional manner:
(i) a composition incorporating fugal elements, requiring not fewer than five and not more than ten minutes to perform, for five-part chorus or for at least three melody instruments and piano;
(ii) a composition, requiring not fewer than twelve and not more than fifteen minutes to perform, for a large chamber ensemble or orchestra with or without soloists and/or chorus; this composition may be in any idiom of the candidate’s choice.
At the Examiners’ discretion the examination includes an oral examination.
