The Tiarks German Scholarship Fund offers scholarships and bursaries to Germanists, intending to register for the Ph.D. or M.Litt. degrees or the M.Phil, course in European Literature. Further details are available from the Department of German and on the web.

The University Library (which is a copyright library), the library of the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages (including the Beil German resarch library) and various College libraries are well stocked with books and periodicals required for research in many branches of Modern and Medieval Language studies. The Department of Linguistics has a well-equipped phonetics laboratory. The multimedia language learning facilities in the University’s Language Centre are open to all graduate students. A room equipped with closed-circuit television suitable for experimentation into processes of language learning and use js also available. Students also have access to the services of the Literary and Linguistic Computing Cent/e, which has equipment for word-processing and other computing, lap-top computers for loan, and provides advisory help. Research into aspects of literary and linguistic computation may be undertaken with the assistance of the Centre’s staff.

Candidates for a research degree should normally possess a First Class degree and present evidence of aptitude for research; but candidates with a good upper Second Class degree will also be considered. Acceptance of candidates for research will be subject to supervision being available. Prospective Graduate Students jin Linguistics should write in advance to the Head of the Department of Linguistics (address as above); those in other subjects who have any specific questions to raise on the scope of their research may write to the Head of the Department (address as above) within which their research topic lies.

Applicants should note that there are no taught courses for Ph.D. or M.Litt. students, although single or groups of lectures are from time to time ottered for graduate students to attend on an optional basis. Graduate students may also be permitted to attend undergraduate lectures or courses provided for the M.Phils in Linguistics or European Literature.
