Linguistics
The M.Phil, in Linguistics provides a broad foundation in linguistics, including phonetics. It is suitable as a self-contained one-year postgraduate course, but it also serves as a preparation for research in linguistics at Ph.D. level. The M.Phil, programme is structured progressively. In the first term there are lectures and classes in Grammar, Semantics, Phonology, and Phonetics. In the second term there are seminars in a number of areas which will normally include historical linguistics, the history of linguistics, experimental phonetics, pragmatics, and the linguistics of Romance languages, as welt as others which may be arranged from time to time. In the final term there is no formal teaching, and students carry out independent research on a topic of their choosing under the guidance of their supervisor.
The examination may include an oral examination on the diesis and on the general field Df knowledge in which it falls and, at the discretion of the Examiners, on the essays submitted by the candidate.
Applications for the M.Phil, course are welcomed from those who have a good firsl degree (at least a high 2.1 Honours degree or the equivalent). Normally students taking the M.Phil, will have spent some time studying linguistics or related subjects at undergraduate level, though exceptions will be considered. Many students move straight into the M.Phil, after their first degree, but others come to it after a number of years away from formal study.
