In the second Diploma year each student writes a single dissertation of 10,000-20,000 words on a chosen subject. The Faculty allow this to constitute 75% of the year’s work,

though this is unusual, and the minimum proportion of 25% is chosen by the majority. The remainder of the second examination consists of the presentation of studio work. In addition there is also a public review with both the internal and external examiners and invited critics in connection with the work presented.

A candidate for the second Diploma examination who satisfies the examiners in the studio work qualifies for exemption from the Part 2 Examination of the Royal Institute of British Architects, provided that the candidate has previously obtained exemption from the Part 1 Examination of the R.l.B.A.

This Diploma course cannot be counted towards a research degree.

Special Note

Applicants are requested to send direct to the Department of Architecture some evidence of their written work (e.g. an essay) and some reduced (preferably A4 size and no larger than A3) drawings from their portfolio. Photocopies are acceptable. No work will be returned unless a stamped, addressed envelope is enclosed.

Shortlisted candidates are invited to attend for interview. graduates who have been offered a place on the course should notify the Secretary of the Diploma Committee of their intention to return by I March, and should notify their College at the same time. graduates who have been offered an interview for a place on the course should inform the Secretary of the Diploma Committee by 1 March if they wish to be interviewed.

A part-time Master of Studies degree course in Interdisciplinary Design for the Built Environment is also offered by the Department in conjunction with the Deportment of Engineering, the Programme for Industry and the Board of Continuing .
