Degrees

A Graduate Student may be a candidate for the Ph.D. (three years) or (he M.Liu., (two years), each degree requiring the submission of a dissertation of not more than 80,000 and 60,000 words respectively, excluding musical transcriptions and examples: there is also a viva voce examination. In addition the Faculty offers one-year M.Phil. Degree courses as above.

Topics

The Ph.D, and M.Litt. Degrees are research degrees and cannot be obtained in composition. Two of the M.Phil, courses have been designed so as to serve in suitable cases as a first year towards the research degrees, but in the case of students taking the course in Musical Composition this will be true only in ito far as their research falls within the scope of the research degrees, which specifically exclude the presentation of composition except to illustrate matters of theoretical interest discussed in the main body of the dissertation.

Libraries

The libraries of Cambridge possess considerable musical holdings of both source and reference material. The University Library is a copyright library for British publications; in addition there arc the Pendlebury Library at the Music School, the Fitzwillkun Museum and several College collections including the Rowe Library at King’s College, lor detailed information regarding holdings, candidates should consult published catalogue, or the respective Librarians.

Special Note to those applying to undertake graduate work in the Faculty of Musk

Candidates for admission should normally possess, or be about to achieve.

First Class or a very good upper Second Class degree of a university where they have studied at Honours Degree level for at least three years. Before making an application, prospective candidates should satisfy themselves that advanced study in their chosen lielil can be undertaken at Cambridge. Acceptance of any applicant will be dependent on specialist supervision being available. When making an application, candidates (except those for composition) must submit as detailed a description as possible of the proposed subject of their research and those who are not already members of the University of Cambridge must also submit some relevant samples of either recent work (if possible written in English) germane to their proposed topic of research, or compositions, as appropriate. Applicants, including those from abroad, may be required to attend an interview with representatives of the Degree Committee.
