Ethnomuslcology

The course consists of seminars and individual supervision. The seminars will provide an introduction to general and specific issues and methods in elhnomusicology. Students choosing to undertake the exercise specified in Regulation 2(iv) below should attend the intensive taught course for the M.Phil, in Musicology in the Michaelmas Term. Students are expected to attend further courses and lectures relevant to their chosen subject of research as advised by their supervisor.

The examination consists, at the choice of the candidate, of either Option A or Option B as follows:

Option A

(a)

a thesis of not more than 15,000 words in length (including tables, footnotes and appendices, but excluding bibliography, musical examples and transcriptions) on a subject in ethnomusicology approved by the Degree Committee for the Faculty of Music; and any two exercises chosen from among the alternatives specified below.

(b) Option B

(a)

a thesis of not more than 25,000 words in length (including tables, footnotes and appendices, but excluding bibliography, musical examples and transcriptions) on a subject in ethnomusicology approved by the Degree Committee for the Faculty of Music; and any one exercise chosen from among the alternatives specified below.

(b)

The exercises required under sub-paragraph (b) of either Option A or Option B shall be chosen from among the following alternatives:

(i) a transcription and analysis of a piece or pieces of recorded music. The candidate’s choice of music must be approved by the Degree Committee;

(ii) a written account of the candidate’s fieldwork accompanied by a collection of annotated sound and/or video recordings made by the candidate;

(iii) a critical study of not less than 5,000 and not more than 7,500 words in length (excluding footnotes, bibliography and musical examples) on a text, or set of texts in ethnomusicology;

(iv) a critical study of not less than 5.000 and not more than 7,500 words in length (excluding footnotes, bibliography and musical examples) on a specific text, method, or subject deriving from the materials covered in the taught course in Musicology.

The nature and length of any fieldwork undertaken by a candidate in connexion with alternative (ii) shall be subject to the approval of the Degree Committee. Candidates are wamed that they may incur additional living and travel expenses if obliged to undertake this fieldwork outside Cambridge.

At the Examiners discretion the examination for either option may include an oral examination on the thesis and other written work and on the general field of knowledge within which they fall.
