The issue of environmental design in architecture has, in recent years, assumed great significance. This one-year course, leading to an M.Phil., offers students from a wide range of academic backgrounds the opportunity to acquire and develop skills and to pursue interests in this field. The course works on a broad front, equal emphasis being placed on the architectural, engineering and scientific aspects of the subject.
1. The history of environmental control in architecture
The development of the theory and practice of environmental control in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, with particular reference to the technologies of heating, ventilation, and artificial lighting, theories of acoustics und to the evaluation of the environmental aspects of the architecture of the twentieth century with particular attention to the modern movement.
2. Principles of architectural physics
The physics of heat, light, and sound as applied to buildings; the impact of climate on building design; the theory of comfort and its relationship lo environmental design specifications.
3. Approaches to energy conservation in building design
The design of the form and thermal properties of the building fabric; mechanical systems and their controls; ambient energy design. This is usually pursued through a project of design and analysis, related to the contemporary environmental debate.
The examination for the course in Environmental Design in Architecture consists of:
(1) a thesis, of not more than 20,000 words in length, excluding appendices and bibliography, on a topic approved by the Degree Committee for the Faculty of Architecture and History of Art;
