English Studies: British Literature 1700-1830
The M.Phil, provides a self-contained nine-month course of study, besides offering a foundation for those wishing to continue towards an M.Litt. or Ph.D. degree, in one of the richest periods of British literature.
(a)
Eight fortnightly lectures on core topics, each to be followed by a seminar, such as; the classical tradition, reason and scepticism in the 18th century, sensibility and the novel, literature and visual culture. Romanticism and revolution, the long poem. Romantic aesthetics;
(b)
Eight fortnightly classes on special periods, in Michaelmas term addressing the decade 1740-50, and in Lent term the decade 1814-24;
(c)
Weekly classes held in the Michaelmas and Lent terms on resources for research, including electronic resources, library search skills, bibliographic reference training, record office research text editing, as well as issues pertaining to critical methodologies.
Work done in relation to these seminars and classes will be assessed in January and April by two coursework essays on topics approved by the Degree Committee (maximum 4,000 words, marks to constitute 20% of the M.Phil as a whole). In March each student will submit a brief written project (maximum 2,000 words, to count for 10% of the M.Phil as a whole) comprising a piece of research or methodological study connected with their reitearch topic.
Throughout the 9 months students will pursue individual research supported by frequent consultation with their personal supervisors, as well as by the classes in research and methodology. A dissertation of between 10,000 and 15,000 words, on a topic approved by the Degree Committee, will be the sole focus of the student’s work between April and iune. The mark for the dissertation will count for 50% of the M.Phil. as a whole.
Applicants should provide the statement of proposed research, the piece of written work, and the declaration of relevant special skills which are required of all applicants for research in the Faculty of English.
