The paintings form a representative collection of Western European Art, supported by an extensive collection of master drawings and prints, and of English watercolours. There is also an important collection of Japanese prints. The Applied Arts include the finest range of European pottery and porcelain in provincial Britain, a choice collection of oriental ceramics, jades, lacquer and metal-work, and collections of textiles, sculpture, medals, furniture, fans, glass, and arms and armour.
The archaeological collections are Greek, Roman, Egyptian and West Asiatic, displayed on didactic principles, and extensive collections of Greek, Roman, Byzantine and medieval coinage.
The Museum’s Library houses the printed materials collected by the Founder, a celebrated collection of Western European illuminated manuscripts of the thirteenth to sixteenth centuries, the only important collections of music manuscripts in any museum in Britain, autograph letters, rare books and an extensive working library on the Fine Arts.
Each of the five departments of Paintings, Drawings and Prints, of Manuscripts and Printed Books, of Applied Arts, of Antiquities, and of Coins and Medals has a specialized library which is available to Graduate Students. Each department has space and facilities for the handling of reserve materials under staff supervision.
