A small number of highly recommended candidates can be accepted annually when their proposed research has the promise of being satisfactorily developed through registration at Cambridge. In Cambridge there is particular interest in medieval art and architecture; aspects of the art and architecture of the Renaissance in Italy, France and Germany; Dutch, French and Italian seventeenth-century art; the history of the classical tradition in European architecture and architectural theory from the 16th-century to the present day; developments in painting in France and England from the eighteenth to the early twentieth centuries, iconography; problems in portraiture; Scottish architecture; art and architecture of Venice and the Veneto; and aspects of the history of colour in the visual arts.
The Department offers a one-year course of advanced study and research leading to the
Certificate of Postgraduate Study, which is a self-contained postgraduate qualification but may also constitute the first year of a Ph.D. degree. The course will include two terms of lectures and seminars, drawing on the research interests of the Faculty. Candidates will write an essay (3,000-5,000 words) and a seminar report (3,000 words). In the third term, they will complete a dissertation of 15,000 words on an approved topic, or relating to their proposed doctoral subject. The assessment will be completed with an oral examination at the end of the third term.
Graduate Students may use the library of the Faculty of Architecture and History of Art which, though operating as an undergraduate rather than a research library, includes a good collection of sixteenth – to nineteenth-century books; also available are the library and collections of the Fitzwilliam Museum and the University Library. Some of the College libraries, as well as the University Library, are exceptionally rich in medieval illuminated manuscripts. It is expected that applicants will already have the linguistic skills necessary for the areas of specialisation they propose to study.
Closing dates for receipt of application forms by the Board of Graduate Studies for admission in October: not specified.
