The Departments within the Faculty are as follows: French, German, Italian, Linguistics, Other Languages (comprising Dutch, Medieval Latin, Modern Greek and Occitan), Slavonic Studies, and Spanish and Portuguese.
Research facilities are available for the degree of Ph.D. or M.Litt. in the following languages: Catalan. Dutch, French, German, Italian, Modern Greek, Medieval Latin, Neo-Latin, Occitan, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish. Facilities may be available in other European languages if suitable arrangements can be made by the Faculty. Candidates will be considered for research in any of the following fields: modern and medieval literature, the history of ideas, cultural history, cultural studies, linguistic study of the language (contemporary, historical), comparative philology. Candidates will also be considered for research on certain historical subjects, particularly in Russian and German history. Candidates may be required to take the M.Phil, in European Literature before proceeding to registration for the Ph.D.
Facilities are also available for research leading to the degree of Ph.D. or M.Litt. in any branch of linguistics, including experimental phonetics, for which there is a new and well equipped laboratory. Members of the Department of Linguistics have special interests in syntactic and phonological theory, in semantics and pragmatics, in the history of linguistics, in historical linguistics, and in phonetics. Candidates may be required to follow the course for the M.Phil. Degree in Linguistics during their first year.
