Core course
The areas of study prescribed are the following (not all module-options may be offered in a given year, and intending applicants should check availability with the course Director at the address given below):
1. Core course (obligatory)
Critical Theory
2. Modules (two to be chosen from one or two of the following fields)
The examination consists of:
(a) a thesis of not more than 15,000 words, including footnotes and appendices,
but excluding bibliography, on a subject approved by the Degree Committee.
(b) three essays, each of not more than 4.000 words, on topics falling within the
prescribed areas of study.
The examination may include an oral examination on the thesis.
Applicants will normally have at least a high 2.1 Honours degree (or the equivalent) in a modern European language (other than English) related at least one of the areas of study prescribed for the examination to be held in the following academical year. Teaching for the M.Phil. is not restricted to comparative studies nor will applicants be required to hold a first degree in more than one European language; they will, however, be able to work in more than one language area should they wish. No formal linguistic instruction will be offered.
Prospective students are encouraged to write for a Prospectus, or further information, to the Director of the M.Phil, in European Literature or by e-mail.
Special Note
Candidates should state their Module preference and short thesis topic on their CIGAS application form. Candidates should also submit a sample of their recent work (an essay or dissertation).
Closing date for completed applications: 31 January for DFID and ORS applicants; 15 February for AHRfi applicants; 31 March for all other students. Completed AHRB forms, with references, should reach the Faculty by 9 April.
