In the sciences. Certificates of Postgraduate Study are available in Chemical E Engineering, and Natural Science. The Certificate of Postgraduate Study in Science is available in the following subjects: Biological Science (including Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Experimcntal Psychology, Genetics, Physiology(Plant Sciences, and Zoology); Chemistry; Materials Metallurgy; Physics. The Certificate examination in the sciences consists of a dissertation and an oral examination, which may include practical teas, on the dissertation and on the general field in which it falls. In addition candidates may also be required to take written papers, generally from the most appropriate Tripos examination.
Applicants should normally hold First or good Second Class Honours or the equivalent. In appropriate circumstances the courses may be counted towards a research degree and in a number of the subject areas mentioned the Certificate is the normal first-year registration for prospective Ph.D. candidates.
Applicants for research degrees in the Faculties of Divinity, English, History, and Law, and in the Departments of Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic, Archaeology, and History of Art may be accepted as candidates for the Certificate of Postgraduate Study in the first instance. For these subjects the Certificate examination consists of a dissertation and/or other exercises, as prescribed in each case, and an oral examination.
