The Divinity Faculty provides excellent facilities for research in biblical studies, ancient, medieval and modern Judaism, patrisdes, church history, doctrine, philosophy of religion and ethics, the relationship of religion and science, and in the study of religions with special reference to Islam, and Hinduism and Buddhism in India. The Degree Committee for the Faculty, in considering applications for admission, will have regard to the availability in Cambridge of an appropriate supervisor and of adequate material for the subject of research proposed.

Graduate Students have access to the Library of the Divinity School in addition to the University Library. There are also other theological libraries of a high quality in Cambridge. In addition to receiving individual supervision, Graduate Students are invited to seminars and discussion groups in appropriate subjects: at present there are regular seminars in Old Testament, New Testament, Hebrew, Jewish and Early Christian Studies, Patristic, Church History, Systematics, Philosophy of Religion and Religious Studies.

The teaching staff of the Faculty at present consists of 21 Teaching Officers, of whom four are Professors and three are Readers; and help is given by members of other Faculties, including the Professors of Hebrew and Ecclesiastical History.

The M.Litt. and Ph.D. Degrees are awarded for a dissertation which must not exceed BO.OOO words. In their first year students are not registered for any degree. Registration for the M.Litt. or the Ph.D. degree is at the discretion of the Degree Committee, on the basis of the candidate’s work in that first year. Candidates are required to submit a written progress report which will be discussed with them by their supervisor and an independent assessor, on whose recommendation the Degree Committee will act. Where appropriate, candidates may be required to undertake the M.Phil, before proceeding work for the MXitt. or Ph.D. Candidates are sometimes required to sit a progress examination, e.g. in a language, at the end of their first year. There is no other course-work or form of examination, apart from the oral examination of the dissertation.

The course provides a training in research through seminars, classes, and individual supervised study. The primary focus must be chosen from among the following: (A) Literature; (B) Philosophy; (C) History; (D) Archaeology; (E) Linguistics; (X) Interdisciplinary approaches to the ancient world. The course also caters for candidates who still need to bring their knowledge of Greek and/or Latin up to an appropriate standard for the subject areas on which they are concentrating.

The examination consists of:

a) A thesis of about 10,000 words, in one of subject areas A-E and X,

b) Two essays, each of about 4,000 words and within the same subject area as

the thesis or on a topic suitably related to it.

c) another essay of about 4,000 words within any area of Classics or a related discipline; or a language examination in Greek and/or Latin; or a language examination in another ancient Indo-European language; or an exercise in a specialist skill such as numismatics, palaeography, epigraphy or papyrology.

In place of an essay, some project of equivalent value may be substituted. Each student’s choice of options and subjects requires the approval of the Degree Committee.

A certificate signed by the Chairman of the Faculty Board of Classics is available to successful candidates, detailing the subject area (B) covered and the work submitted. In this way, the M.Phil, can serve as a qualification in a specific branch of Classics, e.g. Ancient History, Ancient Philosophy. It can also be used as the first year of a Ph.D., providing training in research techniques.

Special Note

All applicants are advised to indicate in Section 1 of their application form their likely area of specialisation. Those from outside Cambridge should supply, on a separate sheet if necessary, detailed information about their previous attainments in Classics (including Greek and Latin language) and in other relevant subjects, and should if possible submit one or two samples of their written work in these areaB.

Closing date for completed applications: 31 January for students applying to AHRB; otherwise 31 March. Please contact the Graduate Secretary if you will have difficulty meeting either of these deadlines.

Regular graduate seminars are held in Greek and Latin literature, ancient philosophy, ancient history, classical archaeology, Mycenaean epigraphy, classical linguistics and philology, and interdisciplinary aspects of the ancient world. It is normal for graduates to play an active part in these. They may also attend classes and lectures from the undergraduate teaching programme. For the one-year M.Phil, course, further special seminars and supervisions are arranged. For the Ph.D. Degree there are no formal coursework requirements, and the principal concern of any graduate student is supervised preparation of the 80,000 word (max.) Ph.D. thesis.

The Classical Faculty Library is an excellent base for research. Its large collection includes a comprehensive range of texts, editions, periodicals and standard works of reference, as well as outstanding specialist collections in such areas as archaeology and palaeography. The nearby University Library, with its exceptionally rich classical holdings, fills virtually any remaining needs.

The Faculty offers financial aid to graduate students for travel to classical lands, research expenses, and attendance at conferences and seminars outside Cambridge.

Further information about graduate studies may be obtained by writing to the Graduate Advisor, Faculty of Classics.

Closing dates for receipt of application forms by the Board of Graduate Studies for admission in October: 31 January for candidates applying for AHRB awards; 31 March for all others. Please contact the Faculty if you will have difficulty meeting either of these deadlines.

The course will include two terms of lectures and seminars, drawing on the research interests of the Faculty. Candidates will write an essay (3,000-5,000 words) and a seminar report (3,000 words). In the third term, they will complete a dissertation of 15,000 words on an approved topic, or relating to their proposed doctoral subject. The assessment will be completed with an oral examination at the end of the third term.

Graduate Students may use the library of the Faculty of Architecture and History of Art which, though operating as an undergraduate rather than a research library, includes a good collection of sixteenth – to nineteenth-century books; also available are the library and collections of the Fitzwilliam Museum and the University Library. Some of the College libraries, as well as the University Library, are exceptionally rich in medieval illuminated manuscripts. It is expected that applicants will already have the linguistic skills necessary for the areas of specialisation they propose to study.
