The M.Phil, aims to explore the relationship between Architecture and the Moving Image through a combination of theoretical seminar-based work and practical workshop exercises and production.
The course examines the changing face of architectural production in the age of digital media, with particular reference to narrativity, historical and artistic conventions, and the emerging virtual environment.
The seminars cover the following topics:
Moving Images and Architecture – Historical to Digital:
The hitftory of the interaction between Architecture and the Moving Image, through the
study of documentary and fiction films from their earliest days to the present.
Architectural Presence – Time in Place:
The relationship between moving images and architectural theory leading to an effective working knowledge of moving image creative production in professional architectural practice (with emphasis on the conceptual side).
Narrativity, Moving Image Language and Expression:
The study of moving-image language and narrative conventions, using up-to-date digital image capture, manipulation and post-production facilities to exemplify analytical work and/or originate creative work.
The examination for the course in Architecture and the Moving Image consists of:
(a) a moving image project, of not more than five minutes’ duration, on a subject approved by the Degree Committee for the Faculty of Architecture and History of Art
(b) two essays, each of not more than 5,000 words in length, including footnotes
and appendices but excluding bibliography and filmography, on subjects
approved by the Degree Committee;
(c) a dissertation of not more than 10,000 words in length, including footnotes
and appendices but excluding bibliography and filmography, together with (i)
a script, storyboard, or sketch book for a film of not more than thirty A4 pages
and (2) a moving image project of not more than fifteen minutes’ duration.
At the discretion of the Examiners, the examination may include an oral examination on the dissertation and on the general field of knowledge within which it falls.
Special note
Applicants are requested to include with their application some evidence of their written work (e.g. on essay) and a short statement of their research interests together with an example of moving image production (if available).
