American Literature
The M.Phil, provides a self-contained nine month course of literary study, and also serves as a prerequisite for students intending to continue with work towards either the M.Litt. or the Ph.D. degree in American, Anglo-American, or related subjects. It is particularly intended for students wishing to approach American literature from a secure foundation in the study of English literature. Close guidance on coursework essays, and the individual supervision of a dissertation, on a subject of the student’s choice, will be given. The course also offers classes on the literary aspects of such topics as early settlement, Puritanism, the Enlightenment, the Frontier, Immigration, Modernism, the Depression, The Cold War, Post-modernism, and on specified historical periods (currently 1845-1855, and 1915-1925), together with seminars on Resources for Research and on the interpretation of American literary texts. Prospective students should write to the Secretary of the Degree Committee, Faculty of English for a more detailed description of the course.
The scheme of examination for the course consists of:
(a) a bibliography of an approved area of study, containing not more than 100 items;
(b) an essay, not exceeding 5,000 words in length, on a topic approved by the
Degree Committee;
(c) two written exercises, not exceeding 4,000 words each, on subjects approved
by the Degree Committee;
(d) a dissertation, 10,000 words in length (including footnotes and appendices, but excluding bibliography), on a subject approved by the Degree Committee for the Faculty of English.
The examination includes, at the discretion of the Examiners, an oral examination upon the dissertation and upon the general Held of knowledge within which the work submitted falls; such an oral examination may include questions relating to the written papers and to the other exercises submitted by the candidate.
Applicants should provide the statement of proposed research, the piece of written work, and the declaration of relevant special skills which are required of all applicants for research in the Faculty of English. For details see page 59.
